Loyola University Maryland to Host 50th Anniversary Celebration for National Endowment for the Humanities

The event, "Democracy and the Humanities," will feature lectures and presentations by renowned scholars from across the country who will engage in the ongoing national conversation on the importance of the humanities in education and in America

Baltimore, Md. (PRWEB) July 30, 2015

Loyola University Maryland will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) with a two-day symposium Sept. 25-26, 2015, featuring lectures and presentations by renowned scholars from across the country.

The event, Democracy and the Humanities, is part of an ongoing national conversation on the importance of the humanities in education and in America. Speakers and breakout session panelists will explore why the humanities were relevant when NEH was created in 1965 and why the humanities continue to be relevant, if not more so, today.

“At Loyola, the humanities play an essential role in our preparation of students to be leaders capable of the critical thinking and deep discernment required in a world faced with increasingly complex sociopolitical issues,” said Paul Lukacs, Ph.D., associate professor of English.

Lukacs is organizing the symposium with support from Loyola’s Center for the Humanities, Messina, and the office of academic affairs. He approached NEH about hosting an anniversary event at Loyola and recommended the Democracy in the Humanities theme.

“We’re thrilled to join with Loyola in celebrating NEH’s 50-year legacy of promoting excellence in the humanities,” said NEH Chairman William Adams, Ph.D. “The subject of this symposium could not be more relevant to the work of the National Endowment for the Humanities, which was founded with the conviction—outlined in our enabling legislation—that ‘democracy demands wisdom.’ We at NEH are extremely proud of our history of helping create the cultural capital that undergirds this country’s democracy. And we welcome opportunities such as this to discuss the ways in which the humanities can help us address some of the most pressing issues of our time.”

Adams and Duke University President Richard Brodhead, Ph.D., are among the symposium’s featured speakers, and individual session discussions will be led by scholars from public and private colleges and universities and representatives from national higher education organizations. Sessions will offer a comprehensive analysis of how the humanities interact with technology, globalization, political discourse, and a diverse range of other contemporary topics.

“The contributions and value of humanities disciplines extend far beyond Loyola,” said Lukacs. “The humanities answer questions that are critically important to a functioning democracy, to a society where citizens make judgments that result in policy. What do citizens need to know to ensure those policies are just and effective? What skills should those citizens have? What knowledge should they possess?”

There are more than a dozen disciplines in the humanities, including history, philosophy, ethics, theology, and literature. Many are an integral part of Loyola’s liberal arts core.

NEH is an independent federal agency and one of the largest funders of humanities programs in the United States, making more than $100 million in grants and awards each year. NEH grants help strengthen teaching and learning in schools and colleges, preserve and provide access to cultural and educational resources, facilitate scholarship and research, and create and advance opportunities for lifelong learning. Loyola has received substantial NEH grants for its honors program, Center for the Humanities, and, most recently, Messina.

The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. A full schedule of symposium events and registration details are available online at loyola.edu/join-us/democracy-humanities.

Third-year Stetson Law student Brandon Williams used a study abroad experience to land a job as a summer associate at a law firm in Madrid, Spain.

GULFPORT, Fla. (PRWEB) July 30, 2015

Third-year Stetson Law student Brandon Williams is spending his summer as an associate at a law firm in Madrid, Spain. The 26-year-old turned a Stetson study abroad experience into a springboard for a summer associate position at the Avego Abogados law firm in Spain.

While working in a different country can pose cultural and language barriers, Williams said that the law firm made him feel welcome. He described the connections he made while working in Madrid as the greatest reward of the experience.

“When I arrived, I was welcomed into the law firm as a long lost family member,” Williams said. “Everyone here was so helpful and generous and did everything to make sure my stay in Madrid was perfect.”

A J.D. student in Stetson’s international concentration program, Williams is helping to draft contracts, assist with litigations, and translate and brief corporate documents and field projects while working at the law firm in Madrid.

“Ultimately, with my degree, in the short-term, I want to either return to Avego next year or take a job at an international firm here in Madrid,” said Williams. “My long-term plan is to finish my career as in-house counsel or general counsel at a company or large corporation like HSN.”

Williams is a St. Petersburg native who also serves as a role model for youth in the area. Williams mentors middle and high school students about how to avoid the school-to-prison-pipeline. He also works with the Tampa Bay Academy of Hope, counseling youth on expungement of juvenile records. He is a member of the Street Law program at Stetson and is part of a team of Stetson students helping to build a piece of legislation to improve contemporary expunction laws that govern the expungement of juvenile records.

The Stetson Law student previously attended the University of Central Florida and the Center for Advanced Technologies at Lakewood High School in St. Petersburg.

Stetson Law offers study abroad opportunities for students in the Cayman Islands, Cuba, England, the Netherlands, and Spain.

Bert Doerhoff, CPA, Offers Insight into New Overtime Rules

$

President Obama’s plan for overhauling the guidelines for overtime pay has resulted in heavy speculation about how it may impact the economy as a whole. Bert Doerhoff offers insight about how small businesses can thrive during this change.

Jefferson City, Missouri (PRWEB) July 30, 2015

President Obama’s plan for overhauling the guidelines for overtime pay has resulted in heavy speculation about how it may impact the economy as a whole. Some argue that the changes will provide consumers with more money to spend, giving the economy a boost. Others say that the move will force employers to lay off workers and stifle the economy’s growth.

The new rules change the minimum threshold for required overtime pay from $23,660 to approximately $50,000. Experts estimate that 5 million workers and their employers will be impacted by the change.

The changes suggest that industries where the term “manager” is applied to a salaried employee in an effort to avoid paying overtime will be forced to restructure their organizations. For instance, a supervisor at a fast food restaurant may be earning $30,000, but working so many hours that their income averages far below minimum wage.

As a result of the new rules, employers may be required to begin offering overtime pay to an increased number of employees, or they may be forced to spread the work among more employees to avoid paying overtime rates to those working long hours.

Many employers will choose to increase the pay of their workers that receive an income near the threshold in order to avoid paying them overtime. For many workers, however, there will be a reduction in hours, and the resulting pay, in order to limit overtime pay.

Companies requiring a restructuring to minimize the impact of the new overtime rules will benefit from the advice of a qualified accountant, who can determine how best to reward employees and retain the best talent without minimizing profitability.

“The new rules will affect many of those employees and businesses that are right on the threshold of the new minimum income level. Any businesses that require advice in how to best structure their employees should give us a call and we can help them be both fair to their employees and also protect their business interests,” says Bert Doerhoff.

Serenity Palms Honors Rocky Hudson, an Advocate of AA and a Beloved Resident of Palm Springs

Serenity Palms honored Rocky Hudson, a resident of Palm Springs who recently passed away. A frequent speaker at AA meetings, Rocky is honored by Serenity Palms, whose "addiction graveyard" reminds us about the importance of living life while burying the addiction.

CATHERAL CITY, California (PRWEB) July 30, 2015

In a meaningful ritual intended to symbolize a final farewell to the chaos of substance abuse, clients at Serenity Palms Drug Addiction Treatment Center have created an addiction graveyard. Sharing this with the public comes at a unique time, as Palm Springs just lost one of its most beloved residents, Rocky Hudson. Hudson (1945-2015) fell in love with the desert when he moved from Redondo Beach to Palm Springs. During his time there, he was an avid speaker at Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings. Serenity Palms honors Hudson's legacy and the philosophy of living and dying sober. The power in living and dying sober is echoed in Serenity Palms "Addiction Graveyard," where addiction dies while the recovering addict goes on to live a sober life.

In a funeral ritual, they bury their addictions by writing eulogies to the wreckage of their pasts and then add decorative rocks as headstones. The rocks bear messages meaningful to each individual client and serve as reminders of leaving the past behind. The collection of various sizes of rocks creates a rainbow of colors in what otherwise can be a barren desert landscape, creating another layer of symbolism of light and hope. Clients paint their rocks with personal designs, such as a key or flower or sunburst. They add quotations and personal messages to share a part of their recovery story. Ceremonies at the addiction graveyard take place at the end of residential treatment, which is a rigorous therapeutic process of coming to grips with addiction and the toll it has taken on the lives of clients and their family members.

“Not only is it important for our clients to say goodbye to the past and keep their eyes on what lies ahead, it also is significant for them to have a visual reminder that the past is gone,” said Jim Gray, founder of Serenity Palms. “We encourage anyone who is recovering from addiction to live one day at a time in the present and to look forward to the future with hope. At the addiction graveyard, they are reminded that others have gone before and have paved the way. When they add their rocks to the graveyard, they add their stories to the communal story. It’s significant and meaningful.”

Drug and alcohol addiction treatment at Serenity Palms helps clients and their families understand that recovery is a grieving process in many ways. Individual and group therapy often uncovers painful incidents in the past that have never been resolved because drugs and alcohol have repressed the memories and emotions. Clients discover unresolved conflicts and negative thinking patterns that have led to their substance abuse.

“When the feelings arise, clients face them without numbing themselves,” Gray said. “They learn to deal with fears and regrets. It’s a process of letting go and experiencing the grief. They also are saying goodbye to a lifestyle that they have become accustomed to. They are afraid of losing friends and relationships. There is a lot of grieving in the work of recovery, so the graveyard is an appropriate symbol.”

About Serenity Palms:
Serenity Palms is one of three drug and alcohol addiction treatment centers in the United States and Canada that are part of the iRecover franchise, a highly successful program using iPad technology to enhance the recovery experience of participants. Serenity Palms, along with Serenity Ranch in Alberta, Canada, and Serenity on the Rock in Newfoundland, Canada, offer the same treatment philosophy. Four- and eight-week residential treatment at Serenity Palms involves 12-step recovery, family participation and various therapies specifically designed to meet individual needs. The use of iPads allows clients to access educational materials and resources at any time. Serenity Palms, located in Cathedral City, California, offers comfortable accommodations with a resort feel. NCPA Publishes U.S. Map of Successful Anti-Fracking Campaigns

Research Shows Campaigns to Ban Fracking are Widespread

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) July 30, 2015

The National Center for Policy Analysis today launched a new map that tracks hydraulic fracturing or “frac[k]ing” bans, restrictions and other government action hostile to this revolutionary technique used to enhance U.S. oil and gas production. This map will be an ongoing project that tracks the status of federal, state, and local efforts to restrict fracking across the United States.

“Fracking bans and prohibitive fracking regulations are a threat to this country’s economic recovery and superpower status,” says NCPA Executive Vice President/COO Jacki Pick. “Enhanced energy production through fracking can help the U.S. revive its economy with unprecedented growth, greatly reduce the national debt and trade deficit, and insure that we maintain our influence on the world stage.”

Fracking, combined with advances in horizontal drilling, is how the United States became a top natural gas and oil producer in just the past few years.

Pick details the importance of fracking in a new video: https://youtu.be/g09FQca1Fvw

“Campaigns to ban fracking too often are based on questionable research, and are progressively choking development in exchange for illusory benefit,” says Pick. While many Americans have heard of isolated anti-frac campaigns, few are aware of the hundreds of successful anti-frac[k]ing efforts that have swept the nation. This map gives a comprehensive view of that activism and the full breadth of the threat it poses to our economy and energy security. The NCPA will continue to update this map over time as new anti-frac restrictions crop up around the country.

See the fracking map at: http://www.ncpa.org/fracmap/

Biotech Company for Alzheimer’s Cure Now… not Care

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) July 31, 2015

BioViva USA, Inc. (“BioViva”), a to-clinic gene therapy company based in Seattle, WA is rapidly transforming the way we treat aging diseases.

BioViva announces it has begun a fundraiser through Maximum Life Foundation (“MaxLife”) to use a promising gene therapy to treat patients with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and find a cure. MaxLife will grant 100% of the money raised to BioViva to help bring pioneering gene therapy to cure this disease and make AD a thing of the past.

Despite years of research and billions of dollars, there is still no cure for AD, and there are multiple negative side effects of approved medications. Many current approaches focus on consequences alone, but BioViva’s gene therapy could offer a cure.

Improvements of AD symptoms and the recovery of normal brain functions have been demonstrated in-vivo in mouse experiments, and in-vitro in human cell experiments through the rejuvenation of microglia (the brain’s first line of defense against infection) and neurons and stimulating mitochondrial function using the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) protein.

In recent studies, Alzheimer’s symptoms were found in brain images in people as young as 20. By the time of diagnosis, up to 40% of the brain can be damaged. “If we can prove a benefit to patients that have no other option now, we can potentially treat Alzheimer’s Disease in people before these symptoms arise, creating real preventative medicine at the cellular level,” states BioViva’s CEO Elizabeth Parrish. “If successful this treatment could potentially be used on other neurodegenerative diseases.”

BioViva is developing labs and partner clinics worldwide. With a world class Scientific Advisory Board including George Church, a professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School; George Martin, Director Emeritus of the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, University of Washington; and the recent addition of Avi Roy an Oxford based Biogerontologist as Chief Scientific Officer, we are ready to push forward into practical solutions. BioViva has the mandate of the scientific community to move forward and treat diseases with no previous cure.

BioViva’s unique difference is treating the cellular degeneration caused by aging as the root cause of most major diseases. Studies have proven aging is the leading risk factor for many life threatening diseases including Alzheimer's.

“This technology has the ability to reverse the age related dysfunction in cells and tissues and the damage it causes. It could halt many of the big age associated killers in industrialized countries’” states Parrish. Compassionate care helps patients with no other option get access to experimental therapies that may benefit both themselves and society as a whole.

Aura Wealth Advises Crisis in Greece Provides Cautionary Tale to Investors

$

Bert Doerhoff, CPA, of Aura Wealth Advisors, announces that the financial behaviors of Greece, leading to the recent and ongoing crisis, provide cautionary information for the average investor. While the current crisis has been resolved, austerity measures are more severe than expected, and the president faces dissatisfaction from citizens.

Jefferson City, Missouri (PRWEB) July 31, 2015

While the Greek financial crisis may have little bearing on individual investors in the United States (illustrated in the fact that the total worth of all Greek companies is a fraction of Apple’s worth, for instance), there are lessons that can be learned from witnessing a country’s financial failure.

Whether an investor is a country, a business or an individual, there are certain rules that always apply for financial health. Borrowing funds to make an investment, for instance, is a risky choice. Failing to diversify investments in a variety of markets and types of investments is also a decision that will invite risk.

An aversion to paying taxes is common, too, whether the entity is an individual, business or country. While it is always advisable to employ strategies to optimize the tax burden on any entity, it is also important to pay the taxes once the amount has been determined and the deadline is near.

Depending on an individual’s investment portfolio, the crisis in Greece may feel far away or alarmingly close to home. However, when it comes to sound financial management, there are practices that protect the investments and others that expose them to unnecessary risk in order to achieve short-term gains.

“The situation in Greece may have little effect on any of us in the United States, but the lessons learned apply to any individual or company that wants to protect its investments. We work with situations every day in which a person is managing their own mini version of Greece, and we work with them to insulate their assets from risk and grow their wealth with proven strategies,” says Bert Doerhoff.

Experienced Homebuilder Chooses Fortis Aluminum Deck Boards to Complete Waterfront Home in Washington State

Modern Bungalow Features Two 40-Foot Decks with 16-Foot Windows, Blending Indoor And Outdoor Living Space. Fortis Aluminum Deck Boards Were Chosen for Their Marine-Grade Resistance to Salt Water and Harsh Weather Conditions

Hood Canal, WA (PRWEB) July 31, 2015

Dennis Carkonen was a custom homebuilder for over 25 years. When he retired in 2011 to build his own waterfront home on Washington’s Hood Canal, he designed a modern bungalow with two 40-foot balconies and 16-foot windows that allow for panoramic views of the canal. Carkonen said he put as much thought into the design and aesthetics of his balconies as he did into the inside living spaces of his home because it was important to have a seamless incorporation of inside and outside living spaces.

Mr. Carkonen said he was initially interested in Fortis Aluminum Decking because of its ability to withstand exposure to salt water conditions. "Because the house is so close to the water, I needed a material for my decks that could withstand exposure to salt water. I chose Fortis primarily because of its salt water rating." Mr. Carkonen also added, “I was very impressed by the Wahoo Decks sales team. Since I am so far away, it was important to me to find a company I could trust. They were able to assure me of the quality of the product, make helpful suggestions, and answer all of my questions.”

About Fortis Aluminum Deck Boards
Fortis is a long-lasting, low-maintenance, waterproof decking, and non-slip surface that can withstand extremely harsh conditions while providing safety and durability. The 8” aluminum board naturally stays cooler to the touch compared to other traditional decking planks. Fortis is environmentally friendly and made of approximately 50% recycled aluminum.

Patented lightning mast provides for protection, portability and rapid deployment.

Greenville, NC (PRWEB) July 31, 2015

LBA Technology, Inc. (LBA), a unit of LBA Group, Inc., announced that the U.S. Patent Office has granted a patent for a line of portable lightning masts designed, manufactured and marketed by LBA. These unique lightning masts, LBA’s PLP-series, offer effective, portable lightning protection. The PLP-Series is the first in the market to offer such functionality.

Its unique design allows an option for a specialized high mobility fly-away kit. These kits are extraordinarily portable with a case for one-person carry. The PLP-Series can be easily set up by two people in under an hour, yet will withstand wind in excess of 100 mph.

The PLP-series is also available in fixed base and non-penetrating roof mount configurations, as well as multiple mast catenary systems to 38 feet high.

These systems provide excellent options for lightning protection in mission critical situations where transportation, set-up and re-deployment are required and the protection of assets is paramount. Using lightning dissipation technology, the masts are designed to divert a large percentage of potential strokes, while complying with National Fire Protection Association standards for mast terminals.

Uses include providing protection for portable satellite systems, communication systems, ground mounted utility equipment, solar arrays, oil production, ammo, flammable storage sites, rooftop assets, and depot environments of various types. Various models of the PLP-series are in use by the U.S. Army, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, the oil industry, water authorities, and more.

“The LBA design team has been able to accomplish the creation of a very unique product and we are pleased this has been recognized with the granting of this patent,” LBA Business Development Specialist Byron Johnson said.

“We have options that allow for transport by nearly any means, including man pack, small planes, helicopters or even a small compartment in a satcomm trailer,” Johnson added.

Transfinder lands 100 new clients in first half, launches new product and increases Transfinder U offerings.

Schenectady, New York (PRWEB) July 31, 2015

Transfinder, a software company based in Schenectady, N.Y., achieved record revenue for the first half of 2015.

Total sales were up 16 percent year-over-year for the first six months ended June 30, 2015 compared with the same period in 2014. President and CEO Antonio Civitella said he expected Transfinder to beat last year’s record-revenue mark of $10.4 million.

“We know what our customers need and want and know how to deliver them efficiently and consistently,” Civitella said.

Transfinder started the year with back-to-back record-breaking quarter. First quarter 2015 revenue was up 20 percent compared with the first quarter of 2014. Second-quarter 2015 rose 4 percent compared with the same period last year. Civitella noted that the second quarter of 2014 had, at that time, been Transfinder’s biggest quarter.

Other highlights:

  • 100 new customers, with more than 50 percent leaving competitors’ products for Transfinder;
  • Release of the highly anticipated Routefinder Pro v12.0;
  • Record attendance at its Annual Client Summit, which was held in Austin, Texas, in May, with more than 250 attendees, up from last year’s recording-breaking 210 who attended in Albany, New York.

Another significant source of revenue growth is the company’s three-day in-house training seminars called Transfinder University. The first in-house Transfinder University was held in July 2014, drawing 11 attendees. Three Transfinder University sessions were held in 2014 with a total of 35 transportation professionals in attendance.

During the first six months of 2015, five Transfinder University sessions have been held with a total of 69 people in attendance. The company’s first out-of-state Transfinder University is scheduled for September at the company’s new satellite office in Austin, Texas. Transfinder University will soon be offered every month.

Civitella said he was pleased by the results for the first six months of 2015, and expected to close 2015 strong.

“School budgets have eased a little bit, so schools have more money available to use on tools like ours that will ultimately pay for themselves and save districts money both in the short- and long-term,” Civitella said.

About Transfinder
Founded in 1988 and headquartered in Schenectady, New York, Transfinder is a national leader in intelligent transportation systems, providing transportation management systems and services to school districts and adult care facilities. Transfinder, an Inc. magazine “fastest-growing company” for the past eight straight years, offers routing and scheduling solutions for optimal transportation logistics. Launching First LGBTQ Substance Addiction Program in Florida

Open Out Recovery (http://www.openoutrecovery.com) is being launched as the first stand-along LGBTQ program in Florida to assist individuals in recovery for substance addiction.

Boynton Beach, Florida (PRWEB) August 01, 2015

Open Out National Outreach Coordinator Joyce Matera is excited about the launch of the program. Previously, Joyce spearheaded the creation of LAMBDA North, a community center and cultural hub in Lake Worth, FL. As a board member, Joyce (pictured) saw the clubhouse overflowing for its lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning community seeking recovery by providing a safe and comfortable place to gather such that recovery was possible.

“Moving to South Florida after thirty-two years in recovery, I felt the need for LGBTQ voices to be heard,” said Joyce at the recent opening. “With so many different traumas and stresses involved, programs that are LGBTQ-dedicated are proven to be more effective than those in the treatment landscape that simply ‘integrate’ LGBTQ services.”

Data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) shows that approximately 20-30% of those who identify as members of the LGBTQ community have issues with substance abuse in comparison to 9% of the general population.

“Successful recovery requires a client to feel comfortable expressing themselves,” said Dr. Liza Weiss, Clinical Director of Open Out Recovery. “Open Out creates an environment where clients can talk freely without fear of judgment from others.”

Open Out’s program utilizes evidence based practices to facilitate a holistic approach to healing that includes focusing on the physical, neurological, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual, that must be addressed. The treatment approach includes emphasis on sexual and gender identity, as well as programming focused on trauma therapy.

Open Out is the latest initiative from Aion Recovery (http://www.aionrecovery.com), a healthcare organization that builds treatment programs centered on peer-supportive communities. Peer-supportive treatment allows the therapists and therapy topics to be specialized to the clients, providing an individualized approach to group therapy.

Aion Recovery has also launched Invictus Retreat (http://www.invictusretreat.com), a male only treatment program, as well as Station House Retreat (http://www.stationhouseretreat.com), a first responder only program treating firefighters, police officers, veterans, EMTs, correctional officer, dispatchers, and other public safety workers.
