Girls from Across California to Gather at the State Capitol and Celebrate 100 Years of Changing the World through the Gold Award

Ventura, CA (PRWEB) June 22, 2016

Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast (GSCCC) is celebrating the Women's Caucus Gold Award Centennial Event on June 22 -23 in Sacramento, California. GSCCC will be joining Girl Scouts from all across California at the State Capitol for an empowering celebration of the organization’s highest award. Jody Skenderian, Chief Development Officer of Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast, will be attending alongside three central coast girls invited to participate in the national celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scout Gold Award.

Representing GSCCC will be Carleigh Ornelas of Santa Barbara; Skye Schwellenbach of Los Osos; and April Hoberg of Moorpark. The girls will travel to the California State Capitol in Sacramento to attend the June 22-23 Women's Caucus Gold Award Centennial Event, meet with District Representatives and receive a proclamation during this two-day celebration.

“We are so proud to honor our local girls at the State level on the occasion of the Centennial of the Gold Award,” said Gina Jaeger, CEO of Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast. “Each girl has created her project based on a need in the community, demonstrating her ability to help make the world a better place.”

The girls will also meet with members of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus and have the opportunity to shadow select legislators at the State Capitol and network with influential women business leaders over two days in Sacramento.

The event at the State Capitol mirrors events all over the country this year, as Girl Scout troops and councils are “Celebrating 100 Years of Changing the World” through the Gold Award. On June 14, GSCCC traveled to Washington, D.C. with Centennial Gold Award Recipient Cory Williams of Santa Barbara, to meet state legislators on Capitol Hill. Over the years, Gold Award recipients have improved the lives of tens of thousands of people throughout the world through projects such as building libraries to help teach new immigrants English literacy skills, constructing hospitals that serve women and children in war-torn regions of the world, and encouraging sustainable food growth and consumption in local communities, among many other beneficial projects.

Earning a Gold Award requires girls to take action in a sustainable way by identifying issues in their communities or the world and working to resolve them for future generations. Like earning Boy Scouts’ “Eagle Scout” designation, earning the Girl Scout Gold Award is a powerful and transformative experience that could entitle girls to college scholarships or an advanced rank when entering the military.

Blacks with Atrial Fibrillation at Greater Risk for Adverse Outcomes

New research from the University of Pittsburgh shows that black people with atrial fibrillation have nearly double the risk of stroke, heart failure, coronary heart disease and mortality from all causes than their white counterparts.

Pittsburgh, Pa. (PRWEB) June 22, 2016

Blacks with atrial fibrillation (AFib) have nearly double the risk than their white counterparts of stroke, heart failure, coronary heart disease (CHD) and mortality from all causes, according to a study published today in JAMA Cardiology.

The study, funded by a grant from the Doris Duke Foundation and led by Jared Magnani, M.D., associate professor of medicine, Division of Cardiology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and cardiologist at the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute, analyzed data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study to examine racial differences in adverse outcomes associated with AFib.

AFib is the most common heart rhythm problem in the U.S. It affects approximately 1 percent of the adult population and more than 5 percent of those 65 years old and older. It also is known to be strongly associated with increased risks of stroke, heart failure and mortality.

“We knew blacks were likely to have an increased risk of stroke, but the findings for heart failure, CHD and mortality are novel and important,” Dr. Magnani said. “This should put the focus on improving prevention efforts for adverse outcomes in blacks with atrial fibrillation, and drive further studies into the reasons behind why this is happening.”

The ARIC Study, sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, recruited 15,792 men and women, 45 to 64 years old, from four communities in the United States—Forsyth County, North Carolina; Jackson, Mississippi; the northwest suburbs of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Washington County, Maryland. The community-based cohort was designed to investigate causes of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, and included baseline examinations in 1986 and more than 20 years follow up.

“ARIC provided an opportunity to examine racial differences in outcomes related to atrial fibrillation. In general, most large studies of individuals with atrial fibrillation are predominantly of white participants,” Dr. Magnani said. “We know that atrial fibrillation is associated with adverse outcomes, but these data provided important insights into differences by race.”

After exclusions, 15,080 participants (8,290 women and 3,831 blacks) were included in the new analysis. Noteworthy racial differences at baseline examination included a body mass index of 27 percent for whites and 29.6 percent for blacks. Black participants also had a higher prevalence of hypertension and diabetes.

During analysis of the 20-year follow-up, 2,348 cases of AFib were identified—1,914 in whites with an incidence rate of 8.1 per 1,000 person-years, and 434 in blacks, with an incidence rate of 5.8 per 1,000 person-years. Researchers found that adverse outcomes in black participants were almost double that for whites.

The incidence rate of strokes in black participants was 21.4 compared to 10.2 in their white counterparts. For heart failure and CHD, the rate difference was almost two-fold higher in blacks than whites. Blacks also had a rate difference of 106 for mortality compared to 55.9 in whites.

Researchers also believe the results are enough to warrant an addition to the current guidelines for the management of patients with AFib developed by the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association Task Force on Practice Guidelines and the Heart Rhythm Society to include the significant difference in adverse outcomes between blacks and whites with AFib.

Limitations of the study noted by researchers included that ARIC participants were from only four geographic regions and that the study is biracial. The researchers are careful to note that generalizability to other geographic regions or to other races and ethnicities may be limited.

“There needs to be further investigation,” said Dr. Magnani, who completed his research while at Boston University School of Medicine. “It’s going to be important to dissect the mechanisms behind why blacks with atrial fibrillation are highly more likely to have adverse outcomes than whites.”

The mission of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation is to improve the quality of people's lives through grants supporting the performing arts, environmental conservation, medical research and child well-being, and through preservation of the cultural and environmental legacy of Doris Duke's properties.

DaVinci Roofscapes® Introduces Four New DaVinci EcoBlend® Colors for Cool Roofs

$

DaVinci Roofscapes has launched four new DaVinci EcoBlend color blend options approved by the Cool Roof Rating Council to reflect sunlight and heat away from a home or commercial structure. The new color blends all meet Title 24 requirements for California.

Lenexa, Kansas (PRWEB) June 22, 2016

DaVinci Roofscapes®, the industry leader in polymer roofing colors, has launched four new DaVinci EcoBlend® options approved by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) to reflect sunlight and heat away from a home or commercial structure. The new color blends all meet Title 24 requirements for California.

Newly-introduced color blends for EcoBlend polymer shake and slate roofs include:

  •          Tahoe-EcoBlend: Light Tahoe, Medium Light Tahoe and Medium Tahoe blend
  •
  •      Mountain-EcoBlend: Light Mountain, Medium Mountain and Dark Mountain blend
  •
  •      Brownstone-EcoBlend: Light Brown, Dark Stone and Dark Tan blend
  •
  •      Slate Gray-EcoBlend: Slate Gray

EcoBlend color blends previously accessible from DaVinci Roofscapes that meet the stringent requirements to receive ENERGY STAR® designations, and still available from the company include:

  •      Weathered Gray-EcoBlend: Light Weathered Gray, Medium Weathered Gray and Dark Weathered Gray blend
  •
  •      Castle Gray-EcoBlend: Light Gray, Medium Gray and Dark Gray

"California's newly-adopted 2016 Building Energy Standards (Title 24, Part 6) will require use of more energy-efficient roofing materials starting in 2017," says Ray Rosewall, CEO and president of DaVinci Roofscapes. "We've developed these new roofing color blends to meet, and in some cases exceed, these strict requirements.

"In recent years when wildfires and severe weather conditions have increased on the West Coast we've seen increased interest in our DaVinci fire- and impact-resistant synthetic shake and slate roofing products. The newly-introduced EcoBlend color family options allow homeowners and commercial property owners to use our durable roofing tiles while complying with the new Title 24 requirements.

"While Title 24 is unique to California, structures in all areas of the country can benefit from incorporating EcoBlend roof tiles. Because these tiles reflect heat and emit the sun's energy back into the atmosphere instead of into a structure, they help reduce the cooling load, and, as a result, increase the energy efficiency of a building. An additional bonus is that a cooler roof contributes to a lower heat island effect in heavily populated areas. This in turn helps reduce your carbon footprint."

Created in 1998, the Cool Roof Rating Council develops accurate and credible methods for evaluating and labeling the solar reflectance and thermal emittance (radiative properties) of roofing products. The company shares this information with architects, specifiers, builders and all other interested parties.

The experienced team members at DaVinci Roofscapes develop and manufacture industry-leading polymer slate and shake roofing systems with an authentic look and superior performance. DaVinci leads the industry in the greatest selection of colors, tile thickness and tile width variety. The company's reliable products have a limited lifetime warranty and are 100 percent recyclable. All DaVinci high-performing roofing products are proudly made in America where the company is a member of the National Association of Home Builders, the National Association of Roofing Contractors, the Cool Roof Rating Council and the U.S. Green Building Council. “We’re excited to announce the launch of C4H10 Challenge, an important social mission we urge everyone to support as Cure4Hunger offers the world's first affordable and legitimate solution to end starvation,” says Martin Luther King III.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 17, 2016

Today, civil rights leader, Martin Luther King III, Global Ambassador for Cure4Hunger (C4H) and actor/activist, Cylk Cozart, Co-Founder of the organization simply known as C4H are proud to announce their next initiative to end global starvation by encouraging people to participate in Cure4Hunger’s campaign called, the “C4H10” Challenge. To join, participants can sign up online at: http://www.C4H10.org.

Severe Acute Malnutrition is a global issue that affects millions of children every year. It is the top cause of death for children under the age of five, taking the lives of more than 3.5 million children every year.* Cure4Hunger founders and humanitarians, Eric Williams and Cylk Cozart became proactive by inventing a viable solution through a revolutionary robotic gardening technology called, Gravity Gardens. "This new invention is equipped to harvest over 20,000 various plant-based crops inside sterile, environmentally controlled, disaster proof domes that can be constructed in any local region" said Cozart. The company uses fossil-free energy and water extracted through atmospheric generators designed to operate around the clock.

“We’re excited to announce the launch of C4H10 Challenge, an important social mission we urge everyone to support as Cure4Hunger offers the world's first affordable and legitimate solution to end starvation,” said Martin Luther King III. ”Our goal is to raise a minimum of $600,000 to build a 3,000 square foot dome in Los Angeles with people’s support everywhere. We intend to build thousands of these humanitarian food domes globally but for now, the L.A. inaugural dome will provide fresh food for those in need,” added Cylk Cozart.

MLK III and Cylk are inviting participants to write C4H10 on their bodies, cars…anywhere visible and post a picture of it on social media followed by contributing $10.00 or more at http://www.C4H10.org and then challenging 3 or more friends to do the same. Proceeds will go towards building the inaugural dome. Whoever raises the most money for the challenge and the person who recruits the most people to enter will win an all expense paid trip to Atlanta to share a meal with Martin Luther King III.

The C4H10 Challenge is an opportunity to join the mission to end hunger, have fun, and win prizes. It’s simple and open to all ages. Individuals, families, co-workers, church members and other organizations are encouraged to participate in the challenge by joining at http://www.C4H10.org.

“Behind The Scenes”, with host James Earl Jones for Public Television, to discuss Prostate Cancer

A new segment will look into treatment of the disease...

(PRWEB) July 17, 2016

“Behind the Scenes,” with host James Earl Jones, is offering a new segment on the subject of prostate cancer.

Except for skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common form of the disease that afflicts men. Fortunately, and especially with early detection, this type of cancer can be treated effectively. Some two million men in America have the distinction of being prostate cancer survivors. However, 30,000 men in the United States die of this particular form of cancer every year. Treatments for the disease include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. A number of other treatments have recently become available, including one that uses the body’s immune system to combat and destroy the tumor. For some older patients with less aggressive forms of cancer, treatment may not be needed at all.

With treatment, a number of complications are possible, including incontinence and erectile dysfunction, which can be addressed with other therapies. Family history is seen as one risk factor for contracting prostate cancer.

“Behind the Scenes” with James Earl Jones (Star Wars) is produced exclusively for public television, but is not affiliated with either PBS or APT. The production is supported by an award-winning team of writers, videographers, and producers.

National Cherry Festival Chief Named New President of Traverse City Tourism

Trevor Tkach, executive director of the National Cherry Festival, has been selected as the newest President/CEO of Traverse City Tourism, this community’s official destination marketing and sales organization.

Traverse City, MI (PRWEB) July 17, 2016

Trevor Tkach, executive director of the National Cherry Festival, has been selected as the newest President/CEO of Traverse City Tourism, this community’s official destination marketing and sales organization.

His selection comes at the end of a four-month search by a special subcommittee of Traverse City Tourism’s board of directors.

In the end, said board chairman Justin Mortier, Tkach impressed the committee with his experience in leading the National Cherry Festival on the national stage, his ties to the Traverse City community and his commitment to a leadership style that encourages independence and creativity.

Tkach grew up in Traverse City, attending Traverse City Central High School and Northwestern Michigan College before earning his bachelor’s degree at Eastern Michigan University. After graduation he worked as an account executive, and later as senior account executive, with the West Michigan Whitecaps baseball team in Grand Rapids. In 2011 he received an MBA from the University of Michigan at Flint.

He joined the National Cherry Festival in 2007 as the Business Development Manager and was named Interim Executive Director in 2011, a job that was made permanent in 2012. He is a member of the Central Michigan University Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and the Michigan Tourism Strategic Plan Service Excellence Committee.

An active member of Rotary, Trevor is the advertising sales chair of the Rotary Show and has been named to “40 Under 40” by the Traverse City Business News eight years in a row. Trevor and his wife Trisha love living in Traverse City with their three children: Lauren, Camden and Carson.

“Working for the National Cherry Festival as its executive director has been an honor and a privilege,” he said. “I'm excited to be able to continue my work celebrating and promoting Northern Michigan in my new role as president of Traverse City Tourism."

“We had some amazing candidates from all across the nation, and Trevor is a natural fit for our organization,” said Mortier. “His passion for Traverse City is evident in everything he says and does. We’ve found a candidate who’s been excited about Traverse City his whole life. This was a very unique opportunity for us, and we believe Trevor’s leadership will provide a great deal of synergy between the two organizations.”

The same feeling was evident at the National Cherry Festival, Traverse City’s signature tourism event, which celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2016.

“Trevor has been an excellent leader of our organization, and has helped lead the Festival’s growth nationally, yet fostering its focus locally on the fruit, and Michigan agriculture,” said Festival President Jamie Callahan. “We are looking forward to continuing a longtime partnership with Trevor at the helm of Traverse City Tourism.”

Organized in 1981 as the Traverse City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Traverse City Tourism is a nonprofit corporation. Its focused mission is to stimulate economic growth through the attraction of convention business and leisure tourism development.

Tkach replaces Brad VanDommelen, who stepped down from the post in March after 10 years at the helm of the city’s destination marketing organization to assume new duties as director of the Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau.

In line with the rest of these innovations, FFS has released a glass cuvette washer that makes cleaning a cell fast and easy.

The FireflySci Glass Cuvette Washer is made from the finest hand blown glass. The design is really a work of art which is both pleasing to the eye and to the cuvettes. The cuvette washer has two cups on the top. One is for the cuvette with a nozzle in the middle and the larger cup is for the cleaning solution. A glass cuvette is flipped upside down and placed over the glass nozzle. When the vacuum pump is turned on the cuvette is treated to a nice, refreshing clean and rinse cycle.

One of the biggest benefits for buying a Glass Cuvette Washer is that scientists handle the cuvettes much less. In a typical lab, a cuvette is first rinsed, then soaked, then rinsed again, and they finally turned over to drip dry. This is a lot of handling and since cuvettes are small, they are easy to drop and break. Using a Cuvette Washer eliminates all these steps as all a user has to do is flip the cuvette over and hit the start button.

Sometimes glass cuvettes can have sticky residue on them. This residue usually requires a strong chemical, such as sulfuric acid, to properly clean the cell. Now since the FFS Cuvette Washer is made from glass, it is perfectly safe to use with harsh chemicals such as sulfuric acid, plus many other chemicals.

Any laboratory that has a vacuum line can easily use this handy cuvette washer. The FireflySci Glass Cuvette Washer comes with one gasket and one number seven stopper, with a glass filtering flask and vinyl tubing as an additional upgrade. To set the washer up, all a researcher has to do is place the washer on top of the filtering flask, attach the tubing to the flask and the vacuum line and they are good to go.

Videos, instructions, and other Glass Cuvette Washer accessories are available on the FireflySci e-commerce website for immediate purchase.

Linda Mack, President and Founder of premier retained executive search and strategic management/human capital consulting firm Mack International, LLC, presented at an exclusive Metcircle Networking meeting on Tuesday, June 14 in New York City.

Chicago, Il (PRWEB) July 17, 2016

Mack International, the premier family office retained executive search and consulting firm, announced that Linda C. Mack, founder and president of the firm, was invited to present a special briefing on family office compensation trends and issues for an exclusive Metcircle Networking, LLC meeting in New York City on Tuesday, June 14. Metcircle is a networking organization founded by Preston Tsao in 1991 for ultra-high-net-worth families. Based in New York City, the group has over 100 member families, located throughout the nation. Their meetings represent opportunities for Family Offices to learn from each other as well as thought leaders in their respective fields. Their June meeting explored the special topic of compensation as it relates to Family Office executives.

Linda Mack was a co-presenter with Patricia Hale Botoff, founder and principal of Botoff Consulting. The presentation’s agenda was built around what was referred to as, “The Million Dollar Question: How much should family office executives be paid?” During the meeting Ms. Mack and Ms. Botoff shared insights on family office executive compensation levels around the country, incentives as part of compensation, benchmarking, trends and best practices in family office compensation structures.

The centerpiece of the discussion was based upon key findings of a proprietary 2015 survey of Family Office compensation conducted by Fidelity Family Offices and Botoff Consulting. Considered to be the most comprehensive nationwide survey to date, 216 family offices participated and reported on 374 executive positions. Ms. Botoff delved into specific details and findings regarding compensation structures and ranges for the top four executive positions surveyed--CEO, CIO, CFO and COO. Base salaries, bonuses, long term incentives and overall benefit packages were discussed. The audience was impressed with the robust nature of the inaugural survey.

Linda Mack followed Trish Botoff’s presentation on the compensation data structuring her discussion around exactly how Family Offices might interpret and apply the latest data. Linda focused on several key trends, challenges and best practices associated with compensation. “The right compensation structure is integral to recruiting and retaining key executive leadership. In order to be competitive, we are helping Family Offices design increasingly sophisticated plans base upon performance criteria,” said Linda. The survey mirrored situations Ms. Mack frequently deals with during her consultation engagements particularly with regard to long term incentives. The increased use of multiple incentives for various purposes is becoming more popular. According to Linda, incentive plans must be carefully selected. “It’s important to be very thoughtful about both short term and long term incentives. There are lots of tools available, but the decision about which ones to use and how to structure the overall compensation package must align with a family’s values and be predicated on what is to be accomplished.” Linda also strongly advises that Family Offices test their final plan so that even under extreme scenarios, it will perform as planned and without surprises.

One of the biggest challenges for Metcircle members and all Family Offices is obtaining reliable data specific to Family Office compensation. Both Linda Mack and Trish Botoff encouraged those attendees who had not participated in the 2015 to consider joining their peers in giving feedback on the next scheduled survey. Linda emphasized the fact that respondents’ confidentiality was strictly respected. “The more data collected, the more relevant the information. This was by far the most robust collection of compensation for Family Office executives, but a larger sample size in each category will truly serve all Family Offices in their decisions related to executive compensation.”

A copy of the survey results are available on the Botoff Consulting website at http://www.botoffconsulting.com

National Debt Relief recently shared in an article published June 12, 2016 how consumers can increase and improve their net worth without having to worry about increasing their earning capability. The article titled “How To Increase Your Net Worth Without Earning More” takes a look at some of the financial strategies consumers can look at to achieve this.

Miami, FL (PRWEB) July 17, 2016

National Debt Relief recently shared in an article published June 12, 2016 how consumers can increase and improve their net worth without having to worry about increasing their earning capability. The article titled “How To Increase Your Net Worth Without Earning More” takes a look at some of the financial strategies consumers can look at to achieve this.

The article starts off by explaining that most people believe that the best and only way to increase net worth is to increase income as well. This might be true but it certainly is not the only way to improve household wealth. There are a few options people can look into to help them grow their finances.

On top of the list is a frugal lifestyle. The article explains that this is one effective method to help consumers increase their net worth because it allows them to free up a lot of their income. Of course being comfortable and living below their means does not happen overnight so it takes some time to be able to practice frugality at home but the results are amazing.

One thing it does is that it allows consumers to focus on the necessary and important expenses in their life and do away with those that are just pulling them down. One other benefit it brings to households apart from just increasing net worth is that if something happens and there is a financial emergency, they are already used to living below budget.

Debt payment is another thing that article talks about which can help increase net worth. The idea behind it is that the interest rate people are paying for on their debts are oftentimes bigger than what they are getting on their savings account. That being said, paying off their debts allows them to save money that would have otherwise been just paid out to lenders and put it to good use.

Liberty University School of Aeronautics Flight Training Affiliate program eclipses 550 students across 44 partner locations

The Liberty University School of Aeronautics (SOA) recently received Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS) approval for its 44th Flight Training Affiliate (FTA) partnership, with Phoenix East Aviation in Daytona Beach, Fla. Liberty’s FTA program now has over 550 students enrolled in 44 locations across the country, including schools in Washington, Hawaii, and Florida.

Lynchburg, Va. (PRWEB) July 18, 2016

The Liberty University School of Aeronautics (SOA) recently received Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS) approval for its 44th Flight Training Affiliate (FTA) partnership, with Phoenix East Aviation in Daytona Beach, Fla.

FTAs are flight schools that partner with Liberty to provide flight training as part of the school’s online Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics degree. The FTA program allows students to pursue a career as a professional pilot. Active military and veteran students, as well as those looking for a career change, can obtain their degree online while conducting all required flight training at a nearby airport. Many students are able to maintain their full-time jobs while they complete their education. Students are able to take online academic courses year-round with eight-week terms, and may finish the degree in as little as two-and-a-half years, based on full-time enrollment.

Liberty’s online aeronautics program is hailed as one of the most affordable university-level aviation programs.

Initiated in January 2014, Liberty’s FTA program now has over 550 students enrolled in 44 locations across the country, including schools in Washington, Hawaii, and Florida.

Schools applying to become FTAs undergo a rigorous review by the School of Aeronautics’ FTA Office, followed by an onsite inspection that investigates all aspects of the flight school to ensure it meets the level of quality required to be part of the FTA program.

The FTA program recently graduated its first two students. One is working as a pilot for Aeroptic, an aerial imagery company, and the other is working as a flight instructor to accumulate flight hours and experience for a career in the airline industry.

“The reason I chose the FTA program was that it offered the highest quality education at the most affordable price for a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics,” said Charles Vazquez, FTA program graduate. “If I had to give a review of (my FTA) aviation adventures, I would give it a five out of five based on the instructors alone … all of them saw my vision and helped me to achieve my goal.”

Currently, the U.S. is facing a pilot shortage in the airlines, corporate aviation, and military and mission aviation. It is estimated that there will be a need for over 558,000 new pilots worldwide over the next 20 years, according to a 2015 report in Boeing’s Pilot & Technician Outlook.

Liberty’s FTA program has created an innovative solution and opportunity for those who have always dreamed of becoming a professional pilot, no matter their stage of life.

“By partnering with FTAs that are nationwide, we have brought the training center to the students,” said Brian Hough, executive director of business development/affiliate operations for the School of Aeronautics. “Now the student doesn’t have to unplug from their family or job to attend. They simply schedule their flight training at the local FTA and complete their online degree courses around their schedule. This creates a much more flexible training environment and pathway to a very lucrative career for less than most traditional university degrees cost.”

Thanks to Liberty University Online Academy — Liberty’s K-12 online homeschooling program — high school students are able to get an early start on their college coursework with dual enrollment classes, while earning their private pilot’s license at their local airport.

The FTA program is opening doors of opportunity for hundreds of students and meeting a growing industry need, all while providing the level of education, service and value that makes Liberty University one of the nation’s top rated and fasted growing institutions of higher learning.

For more information on the program, visit Liberty.edu/FTA.

New Report on Dangers of Medical Tourism for Plastic Surgery Underscores the Need for Great Caution in Selecting a Physician, says Dr. J

Commenting on a recent article, the Beverly Hills-based plastic surgeon notes that trying to save money by obtaining procedures in countries with few patient protections can be enormously costly.

Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) July 18, 2016

According to a July 13 article on Time, a recent report has revealed that some U.S. citizens travelling abroad for plastic surgery have been left with severe infections. The study specifically mentions some 21 Americans who obtained procedures in the Dominican Republic and contracted an RGM (rapidly growing mycobacteria) infection through improper operating conditions. According to Time, the report notes that the condition is marked by “painful nodules that develop into persistent, discharging abscesses.” Beverly Hills-based plastic surgeon Payam Jarrah-Nejad, M.D., F.I.C.S., F.A.C.S., better known to his patients as Dr. J, comments that the report is another strong reminder of the need to be extremely careful when selecting a plastic surgeon and to be especially skeptical about the wisdom of obtaining procedures in nations which may not have the same kind of standards for medical safety as the United States.

Dr. J adds that, while it’s understandable that patients want to save money on procedures, they should seriously consider the possible costs of obtaining a procedure that may not be performed in the safest facilities or by a surgeon whose credentials have been fully vetted by a respected U.S. physicians’ organization. Even if procedures do not result in the kind of serious health problems mentioned in the recent study, he notes that correcting unsightly or painful botched operations can cost many times the amount of a single plastic surgery, not to mention the additional stress, heartache and significant recovery time associated with obtaining multiple revision procedures.

Dr. J also notes that prospective plastic surgery patients very often overestimate how much a procedure with a fully qualified American plastic surgeon will actually cost them. He adds that, in his experience, patients are often pleasantly surprised to learn that they can afford procedures and that cost is rarely determinative of whether or not patients ultimately choose to have a procedure.

Dr. J adds that, even when seeking treatment with physicians in the U.S., it is important that patients exercise some caution. Specifically, he strongly advises anyone considering a procedure to only consider a board certified plastic surgeon for any plastic surgery. Dr. J notes that plastic surgery is among the most demanding and precise medical specialties, and that only board certification ensures that doctors have been judged by their peers to be fully qualified to perform the full range of procedures.

Dr. J adds that, of course, there are many fine plastic surgeons working all over the world. Specifically, such nations as South Korea play host to many truly skilled and experienced plastic surgeons. He also notes that seeking out their services might result in very good outcomes but, for Americans, they are likely to be more expensive than seeking care closer to home.

Readers who are interested in obtaining any kind of procedure for themselves or a loved one are invited to call Dr. J’s office at 310-683-0200 or visit http://www.DrJPlasticSurgery.com. Dr. J is double board certified by both by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery.

Novant Health now using new technique to treat skin cancer

Radiation therapy treatment option for some skin cancers

(PRWEB) July 18, 2016

Doctors at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center are using a new technique to treat nonmelanoma skin cancer. The procedure known as skin brachytherapy uses a device called a Leipzig applicator to deliver radiation directly to the cancerous lesion. This noninvasive alternative to surgery targets the cancer cells without causing pain or damaging surrounding tissue.

“The treatment is particularly effective in the early stages of nonmelanoma skin cancer,” said Dr. William Warlick, a radiation oncologist at Southeast Radiation Oncology. “It’s most effective in the treatment of squamous and basal skin cancer lesions smaller than 3 millimeters.”

Warlick added that elderly patients who are taking blood thinners and people who have cancer lesions located in delicate areas that are hard to reach are good candidates for the treatment.

Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays, or other particles, to destroy cancer cells. Because of the high degree of precision, the treatment can pinpoint the lesion and spare much of the surrounding area.

Radiation therapy is a good alternative to surgery for skin cancer, particularly in hard-to-treat places such as on an eyelid, the nose, lips or ear. Unlike surgery, radiation therapy does not cause scarring and typically results in little, if any, cosmetic damage. There is also no damage to surrounding tissue.

“The Leipzig treatment differs from traditional external beam radiation therapy,” Warlick said. “It is more precise and can be used directly over the tumor.

“There is also less exposure for the surrounding tissue,” he added.

Skin brachytherapy with the Leipzig applicator is painless since there is no cutting or blood loss as with surgery. The treatments are short, lasting three to five minutes with the course of treatment usually consisting of six to seven applications over two weeks, Warlick said. More importantly, brachytherapy not only provides good cosmetic results but it has also been shown to be highly effective in preventing the skin cancer from returning, studies have shown.

“It is between 93 to 95 percent effective depending on the size of the lesion,” Warlick said.

Side effects are generally mild and dissipate quickly, usually within two weeks of treatment. Short-term side effects include redness of the treated area and peeling or moist skin. Longer term, patients may experience some discoloration of the skin and loss of hair at the treatment site. Warlick said the cosmetic outcome for patients is excellent.

“There’s no pain or discomfort following the treatment,” Warlick said. “Sometimes, patients will experience some dry peeling or moist blistering at the treatment site.”
